Travel Safety Tips

Travel Safety Trips for Traveling Overseas or Abroad

  • For extra security carry your valuables in a hidden money belt – most travelers find the waist version most comfortable
  • Get health insurance and make sure it will cover you at your destination
  • Use traveler’s checks or a credit card for large purchases. Both of these are traceable and replaceable if you lose them and are a better option than large amounts of cash
  • To avoid pickpockets carry your money in different places on your body, rather than together in a highly visible waist pack – money belts are your best bet
  • Keep a copy of your credit card numbers and credit card companies in the hotel safe. If your credit card is stolen you’ll still have access to report it and freeze the card
  • Be wary if someone bumps into you, the person might be a pickpocket
  • Know where the nearest U.S. embassy, a police station or hotel is in case of an emergency
  • Don’t share personal information with anyone you don’t know
  • Travel in numbers to ensure safety
  • In case of an emergency it’s a good ideas to leave copies of your itinerary, passport and visas with family or friends
  • Leave expensive jewelry at home – this also includes expensive-looking jewelry – you don’t want to make yourself a target
  • Don’t forget to fill in the emergency information page of your passport

How to Revive Water Repellency of Your Raincoat

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo, Japan

Virtually all rainwear is treated with a durable water repellent (DWR), to make the raincoat repel more water. Most raingear on the market is water resistant and not waterproof. A waterproof coat would be made out of vinyl or rubber.

DWR can wear down over time due to normal wear and tear, oils from skin, dirt and scrapes. Rain wear fabric will need to be retreated. You can purchase a water repellent fabric spray and treat your coat at home.

First wash your raincoat with a gentle detergent such as Forever New Biodegradable Laundry Soap on a gentle cycle or hand wash depending on the garments washing instructions.

Let your coat dry before treating with DWR. Hang your coat outside and spray a thin even layer of DWR per instructions. Let the fresh DWR treatment dry for one or two days.

Next, gently treat you coat with heat. You can tumble dry on low if the garments instructions allow for a tumble dry. Alternatively, you can steam the coat with a clothes steamer or hang the coat in the sun for an hour.

These steps should insure that your rainwear is water repellent and will protect you from the rain.

Water Resistant vs Waterproof

Waterproof vinyl rainwear is not breathable and will cause the wearer to sweat

Mycra Pac Raincoats are water resistant and not waterproof.  Water resistant raingear will keep you dry when there is light precipitation. For this reason, Mycra Pac Raincoats are a popular choice for commuters in Seattle, WA where there is a drizzly rain most of the year.

On the other hand, waterproof rain wear will keep you dry when the rain is pouring down. The downside to waterproof rain gear is that it is not breathable and will cause the wearer to sweat. Newer high-tech laminates such as Gore-Tex, eVent and Dry.Q are both waterproof and breathable and are a popular choice among active people that do outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing and snowboarding.

There is no standard of breath-ability among manufactures of waterproof laminates, therefore buyers will need to rely on customer reviews and past experiences with a brand when choosing laminate rainwear that is both breathable and waterproof.

Rain wear by Mycra Pac does not offer a laminate type waterproof rain protection, therefore Mycra Pac Raincoats are lightweight, breathable and offer maximum comfort for light rainfall. Mycra Pac raincoats are made of 55% nylon and 45% polyester and offer protection from light rain, but not drenching rain. Mycra Pac Raincoats are a great choice for commuters that need rain protection when walking to and from their car or waiting for the train. Mycra Pac Raincoats are not designed for hiking or backpacking.  A pouring rain will over saturate the fabric, water will seep through the fabric and the wearer will get wet.

When choosing rain wear it is important to think about where you will be wearing the rain gear and how much rain protection you need. If you need rain protection for your commute to work or for going out to dinner Mycra Pac Raincoats are an excellent choice. Mycra Pac raincoats offer water resistant protection, are breathable and look great with work clothes and evening wear.
